This is something my friends and I have been thinking about (I'm in London) and it's hard to avoid concluding that the best option is just moving to the US. I think the UK government is at least aware of disruption from advanced AI, and perhaps there's a world where the UK adopts faster than other 'middle powers', but it's hard to see a way out. This is especially so because I suspect the first wave of automation will happen with jobs that people have limited sympathy for (I don't think many people here will mourn the death of entry level white collar work.) Maybe the UK has some proprietary data it could sell, or perhaps we gain some advantage by integrating AI into government faster than other countries, but I'm pretty sceptical. Maybe our best hope is to turn the whole country into a Cotswold-like themepark for American tourists to visit...
